Round-cut samples are preferred for compression tests in order to obtain a homogeneous stress distribution.

The reduction in the length of the sample against the compression load applied is graphically recorded and with calculations similar to those in tensile tests a diagram of change of shape of engineering compression stress-compression unit is obtained. In the compression test, as with the tensile test, similar connections apply between actual and engineering stress and unit change of shape.
