pH is a measurement parameter that expresses the acidity – alkalinity of a product. pH is acronym for “Power of Hydrogen”. pH means the activity of Hydrogen ions. It is a logarithmic measurement that shows the concentration of hydronium ions in a solution. It is a logarithmic expression of H+ or OH- concentrations in an aquatic solution. In the expression pH, “p” refers to the mathematical symbol of the minus logarithm and H to the chemical formula of Hydrogen. To express the H+ and OH- concentrations of aquatic solutions on a single chart, the minus logarithm of the H+ ion molar concentration is obtained and it is called pH. If the H+ concentration is larger than the OH- concentration, our substance will be acidic; which means that the pH is lower than 7. If there is an equal number of OH- and H+ ions, then the substance is neutral and the pH value is equal to 7.

The most acidic solutions on the pH measurement scale have very low pH values such as 0,1 or 2. This means that there is a large amount of Hydrogen ions. pH values of 12, 13 or 14 corresponds to a very small amount of Hydrogen ions. If the amounts of OH- and H+ are equal, then the substance is neutral and the pH value is 7.
